Scary moment today-for the first time in 2.5 yrs with the A8 I felt like it was

about to turn to s#@t. As I drove up to the mountains to pick my son up from a scout camp/tramp/caving expedition I barrelled into a corner way too fast and was forced to brake hard causeing the ABS to trigger and the whole car to slide sideways with a loud screeching protest from the tires Luckily amid the panic I came to my senses and took the foot off the brake-slammed the tip lever back to second and planted the accelerator firmly to the floor.
The trusty ABZ responded pulling the car out of the slide and back to where it should be.
My heart returned to its only slightly quickened pace and I carried on my way.
A lesser car would not have had the same outcome Im sure

I don't understand - Paul says you did right thing . . .
. . . keep in mind I'm not a racer nor do I have any track experience.
Perhaps I don't understand the situation - were you in a severe understeer condition and heading for the shoulder of the road, when - instead of letting the ABS thing do it's job and continuing to steer through the corner - you released the brake and floored the accelerator, when the car ended it's understeer and you were then able to successfully navigate the corner?
Again - I have no track time under my belt so please pardon my ignorance - but this doesn't make sense to me. Seems like when you released the brakes the understeer would get worse due to less weight on the front tires and you would have been in deeper s&%# than you were in the first place . . . ?
But now that I read your post a bit more closely you state that the car slid sideways - indicating an oversteer condition perhaps? If that is the case - is Paul saying you did the right thing because of the front wheel drive? I don't think you'd do the same with a rear wheel drive car - seems like the best thing to do would be to get completely off of the accelerator . . .?

He drove the car with his right foot
Which many times can get you out of a situation vs. using the brake. It allows steering to work and quattro to pull you where you need to go.
Case in point, massive over steer here due to driver's error, but I floored it and gave it opposite steering input and it hooked up....even look at the rubber I left!

Here's the same corner with the car pointing the correct way:

I wouldn't suggest doing what always overcharged did unless you are very comfortable with your car and have done track time, autocross or street racing.

The sudden acceleration shifted the weight from the fronts to the rears, which oversteered
I would take oversteer over understeer anyday! The only thing scary is if you have stock suspension and the D2 is a bit boaty if its pure stock. The Quattro does a lot for stability.
