Default Serpentine belt question...

I apologize if this has been covered but tried to search and everything I found refered back to Audipages which is down and my situation is a bit time sensitive.

Was getting the oil changed at my mechanic yesterday and he pointed out the serpentine belt was pretty cracked and told me it should be changed. He offered to do it for $50 if I brought him the belt tomorrow morning. I wanted to see exactly what the procedure is and if its worth having him do it. Reason I ask is it took me exactly 10 minutes to do the one on my RX7 so if its that simple I was going to tackle it myself but if its more complicated $50 doesnt sound too bad.

Would appreciate any insight.

Thanks,
Ali

Default It's not very difficult

It's not like something is going to blow up if it was to break.

When are you do for your next timing belt job? I would consider deferring it until the next timing belt if you plan on doing it within the next year.

good to know its not that difficult. think he was just trying to scare me that it could break at any moment.

I was planning on doing the timing belt next spring/summer so will just let it ride and toss a new belt in the trunk just incase.

Default take the 10 minutes to do it now. much better than finding yourself

sidelined somewhere in the dark with the belt in the trunk and your tools at home.

on the A6's it's possible for the serp belt to wrap around the crank pulley and bind up the timing belt...rare...but possible.

Default Make a drawing before you take it off, showing the path

I've taken to drawing on the body or rad core support with a sharpie. That way it is there if the belt breaks or comes off.

I have an ML320 too, Alabama beer can. Yuk.
Watch the harmonic balancer.

As I recall you can pin the serp tensioner "open". (2000)

Default great idea will do that.

as for the ML, the wife bought it before we met so I was not involved in that debacle. Now that it just hit 50k miles she is going to let me dump it and get another landcruiser as I am still sore about the one I had to sell to make space for her car when she moved in. This one will be a 100 series though.
