Default So a friend of mine drove his 01 A8L thru the car wash with clogged drains and now the Dealer wants

$1600 for a new TCU.

Long story short: He drives the car trough the car wash and Niagara falls flows in through the vents, ABS and engine light goes off, car still runs but has very little power. He can get up to 70-80 on the freeway but the car has no acceleration. He takes it to the dealer and they say he needs a new TCU. $1600 They can't get the part until late next week, so I get the call, "I'm at the dealer and they want $$$$, what do you think"

Can the TCU be dried, or is it fried? Anyone have a used TCU for an 01 A8?

Thanks in advance for advice.

Default Pull it out, open it up and let it dry out...

Providing no soap got it and it is only water, it should work. When it is wet, there are additional electrical paths which give problems, once dry, those paths should go away.

Default Too bad, I have one for a S8, but won't work on the A8

Somebody bought an 02 or 03 A8 TCU thinking it would work for their S8....but it doesn't code to S8, only A8. They tried selling it to anybody for about $200, but I don't think it sold.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/147238.phtml">I found the post, I don't know if he ever sold it</a></li></ul>

Default agreed. open it & set it in front of a fan for a few hours. I wouldn't use anything as harsh

as a hair dryer on it, though.

Default I'm the guy with the 02 A8 TCU

Bought it hoping to get Sport mode transmission programming like PaulW did for his S8. Turns out the A and S model TCU's are engine code specific.

Cool thing is I **think** my 02 A8 TCU will actually upgrade his car to enable the Sport mode on his 01 A8. This would be terrific for 01 A8 owners as there are a lot more recycled 02/03 A8 sport mode TCUs than there are 02/03 S8.

All the part numbers are in the post PaulW attatched to his response below.

Let me know if you want it...

Thanks, Ed

Default I'm taking a look at the car tomorrow, so I'll let you know Monday.

I guess they made him prepay for the part to order it, so I need to find out if we can cancel it first.
I'm sure there is a 15% restocking fee. How much do you want for it?

Default or rinse it out with alcohol

isoprop... will dry water from electronics boards quite nicely.

Hmm.. Q-tips anyone?

Heating to about 115 degrees F (hot to the touch ) would be a good thing too.

Time in front of a fan would be a lot easier. But you don't get the satisfaction of "doing something ;-)

Default Dry it out. Mine was completely underwater many, many times.

Before it finally died.

I found a couple of places on the internet willing to rebuild it. Much cheaper than the dealer.

I would also snake your drains.
