The W-12 6 litre, sprinting from 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds? Or is that more something for the RS8? Questions...Questions...

For the next S8, my "Short List", ...
.
for starters :-)
1. Motor and horsepower ... who knows, but a naturally aspirated 5.0-5.5L V10 could easily be 450 HP. I assume it'd have a dry sump, and the oil tank needs to be behind the motor.
2. A paddle-shifting manual sequential 6-speed gearbox (acts like a Tip without the torque converter), though it's tricky getting these to shift both quickly and smoothly. Also, this would probably save 50-100 lb.
3. Offer some performance options:
... a. Ceramic brakes - 40-50 lb savings of rotating unsprung weight
... b. Manual lightweight sport seats - 100 lb saving
4. A Torsen center differential with a 4:1 bias ratio to further reduce power-on exit understeer. (Note that the '04 A8 has a 3:1 bias Torsen versus the 2:1 bias ratio on the earlier A8/S8's). Perhaps it's also time to start with a front/rear torque bias of 40/60 rather than 50/50.
5. Tires -- 265/40-19 and/or 265/35-20 on 9.5" wide wheels
6. Major cooling system upgrade with perhaps a large separate oil-to-air heat exchanger. The cooling system of the current S8 is inadequate on the track.
7. Get aggressive with the suspension design.
... a. The shocks on the RS6, except adjustable, would be a good start.
... b. Allow further lowering of the air suspension with a "Sport" mode.
... c. Many many exciting possibilities with an active suspension, such as an ESP "Sport" mode.
8. Offer a sport exhaust option similar to Porsche's. At the push of a button, resonaters or mufflers are bypassed. [Darn, that button makes a Porsche sound sweet.]
9. Get aggressive with a weight loss program, even if it has to be an extra cost option, and start with unsprung weight. Think titanium, magnesium, and carbon fiber! The A8/S8 is already ahead of the competition here; it's time for a quantum step to leave them in the dust. Set a goal for vehicle weight of 3490 lb or 1580 kg.
Needless to say, I'm putting emphasis on much more than just the motor of the next S8. Give me some time, and I'll add to this list!

Perhaps we could get a deal on one of these used '01 ...

Audi R8's
Actually, I don't think my wish list is unreasonable. The S8 would be even more of a stealth machine.
