<center><img src="http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/1892/starterxk3.jpg"></center><p>Today I thought I test my luck.
laid down and gave a wiggle, mostly upwards cause gravity is down ALL the time, at the cables tied together in the picture.

then went and turned the ignition, and oh ,mon dieu, mein got it started!
joy didn't last long though, as the car sound rough and after some misfires while idleing stopped. restarted again rough and couldn't raise over 1500-2000 rpm then after 30sec died again.
then it couldn't start
tried many many times, most couldn't start, some started and died soon afterwards and few, as 3-4 times, stayed on for more than 2 minutes before stop.
higher rpm is out of the question.

vag-com shows some misfires.
when the car cools has many chances actually starting.

so, to quote LOTR II, "what is this new devilry"?

Default Re: There is a connection on the RH side that corrodes

Hi guys. Great info from PaulW! I also have starter problem on my A8 -97. Car had been unused for several months and after replacing with a new battery, it started immediately. But now the starter solenoid just says "click" and no turning of the starter engine??? The solenoid/bendix was replaced only few months ago. Any ideas??? Grateful for any tips...

I know this thread has been dead. But how you resolve the issue? My starter also says click, lights dim, wire to the starter gets little bit worm after abuse, and thats it. Wd hit the stater with crowbar, but no luck.

Whoa. Ghost Thread!

Yeah, the "interconnect" block is a more likely candidate-- assuming you are absolutely CERTAIN your battery is good. But, after that, yeah it's the getting to the starter problem.

Front right wheel off and inner fender liner is the best... but it's not easy to get to.

Thank you for answer!
This is the spot that gets slightly worm after 10 cranks or so. We checked it, it has some green on it, but didn't seem to corroded. Tomorrow will take the insolation of and see whats what. It's almost 1 am here.
If this won't resolve the problem, should I try to jump start from some relay, or check it, was it 369? Or the clicking and current draw indicates that relays/switches/etc should be okay? Ofcourse, nothing is 100%, but thay do yoy guys think?

The weird thing is, after this many D2s, I've never had a starter go bad. But I've had several instances of the "goo inter-connect" syndrome.
That 'greasy kraaap' was supposed to be an insulator, but over time it separates from the electrical junction conductors, the water inflitrates and you get higher impedance across the interface.
So, yeah, if you are seeing it get warm there, that's a pretty likely candidate. I've spooned it out with a tongue depressor (I'd disconnect the battery terminal in the trunk first.... and always have your radio code handy) first, then blasted with WD-40 to displace the water and debris... dry and re-connect. I've never tried it but some copper paste like you'd use on brake parts might work between the contacts. If you live in a wet climate it's a common place for issues.

Interconnect had some corrosion, but it was very small and only on the surface. Cleaned it, added copper grease, also greased/cleaned ground cables, but no change. Still have that click and thats it. Batteries are good. Charged, and can start my e39 3 liter diesel with no problems. Also 204 relay, thats on pasengers side foot area, the on the left side clicks when ignition is turned and when trying to start the motor. So 2 clicks.

And I also have this message
I guess it just says that I have to press brake to engage a D. So it shouldn't be a problem? Asking for just in case.
