A tidbit from a German car engineering site
Work on new AUDI S8 in full course
04. March 2004: How admits from enterprise circles at the edge Geneva automobile salons became, AUDI works at present intensively on a new sport version of the Topmodells A8. after hearing is the S8 developed at the Tuning department Quattro GmbH however at the earliest in the year 2005 on the market to come.
The question about motorizing the sporty luxury sedan is however still open. A group in the enterprise prefers a V8-Aggregat, while another rather on a ten-cylinder, loaded with two Turbos, which drive of the supersports car Gallardo of the AUDI daughter Lamborghini sets. In each case the S8 is to be propelled by a higher performance engine than 317 KW strong twelve-cylinder engine of the AUDI A8.

A twin turbo V10 would be over the top, ...
even for me. The Engine Specs of the naturally aspirated 500 hp Gallardo motor would be just fine thank you.

They'd have to use alot of composit materials up front to get
your ideal weight distro. (50/50) or any where near it. I'd be nice though to see Audi go all out on this to take on the new M5 which has a 8000 Rpm, 500 hp engine which is connected to a 7 speed SMG 'box. It'd also be nice to see if Audi uses the e-gear from the Gallardo, or the dual clutch (my ideal would be the latter, smoother, and just as quick shifts with better reliability(?). As you have said before a carbon fiber roof, Porsche's own ceramic composite brakes, lighter rims, and etc. would make this an absolute beast that would be able to keep up with Ferraris.

moving the engine back wouldn't be that hard
the old awd dtm cars used gear "casettes" to move the drive up each side of the engine casing - a much better solution imho than the usual transfer case/front drive shaft which inevitably raises the engine and cog (mb 4-matic, bmw x-series).
length would be one of the things that would count against the v10, vs a v8.
as an aside, it is interesting that alfa have announced that they will use the torsen-c in their new awd sports wagons (a la quattro le mans).

Not sure how this may effect the S8, but
it looks like the S6 may be back on track (for a while VAG was saying RS6 only). The RS6 will have a turbo V8, while the A6 may very well have the V10. That would require a new firewall to fit the engine. The would also change steering gear and God only knows what else. Wonder if it'll see the light of day in the end.
