recall
"hunting" is a torq converter sysmptom, not a transmission function. Though we may lump the TC and transmission into one.
A slipping/failing TC might send debris through the transmission fluid into the transmission, but the two elements are seperate, joined by a shaft.
A torque converter is designed to slip, The lock up clutch is an add-on that improves fuel economy. If the TCC failed completely, the car would drive like an old Dodge ;-)
A "transmission rebuild" will not fix a failed TCC and Vice-versa. Extrapolate that to the Valvebody and then to the TCU, and you have a system of components, each with character and weaknesses.
Above about 2000rpm, the Transmission Control Unit tells the TCC to "stay locked unless shifting" When you select the gear range to keep the revs above that range, that's what you get.
Engines don't mind revs, trnsmissions don't mind revs, If you don't mind revs, All is well.
Just don't be banging shifts with all that rev induced inertia! That's hard on stuff.
Just for the record.

audipages is your friend
Everything you need to know about recoding the tranny can be found <a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/codingtransmission.html">Here</a>.

The standard North American code is 00002. The European one is 00011.
But, honestly, if my experience is any guide, it's not worth doing. Many here will disagree, though.
But VAG-COM is worth getting anyway. It's a valuable diagnostic tool.
