Torque converter
When I purchased a 98 A8, I read about possible tranny problems and decided to get an 48 month aftermarket drive train warranty as a hedge against future problems. I figured $600 bucks was a good investment a year and a half ago. It appears that today is the future.
After feeling something odd during mild acceleration, I took it to a tranny shop where scanning produced a 703 code (he might have said 701, I don't remember). Anyhow, it was something like torque converter bridge something.
Essentially, they told me the TC has a clutch of some sort and it needed to be replaces. the price tag will be in the 1400-1500 range. My warranty has a $100 deductible but the labor rate is only $45/hr. A good part of the total bill is labor. Still, it looks like I will recoupe more of the initial warranty cost that I paid.
I'm debating whether to go further out of my area to find a shop with a lower labor rate. Most of them around here are $75-85/hr. The warranty is through CARS. Anyone have a suggestions?
I also know a "guy" who said he could do the job in his residential garage, but somehow, I don't think CARS would consider him as a "qualified" repair facility.
