Trans rebuild report
Got my '97 A8Q back from King Transmission last week. Only one problem, and it is back in their hands to solve-- the thump at the stop sign when the car approaches a stop.
On the good side-- no more hunting, no pump bearing squeal or high-pitched whine, and shifts are smooth and predictable, with much better downshifting response. Before anyone goes over there to follow.... lets see if they take care of the remaining issue of the thump. One good thing is that they provide a car whenever you drop off yours. Not much of a car--- but beats paying or walking.
The cost was $2300. The rebuilt torque converter really makes the car launch much better-- I suspect it has a slightly higher stall than the factory, and even my wife noticed that the car is much quicker out of the hole. It also shifts at redline now, not 200-300 rpm lower.
They provide a 12/12 warranty which ought to provide plenty of time to verify if they did it right.

Finally some good news to report for us future rebuilders...
although I'll wait to see what the final report is after a few thousand miles. The price for a rebuild does not sound as bad as I'd first thought. I just might keep my A8 forever now and put some $ into other maintenance on the car.

Re: Awesome! ..and this thump issue is really weird......
The shop is located in Elmhurst IL, a Western Chicago suburb.
I don't want others to head over there until I am sure it is safe to go into the water.

Yeah, tht's my take at this point. I asked Audi to run a history on maintenance, and when I found out the TB, water pump, tensioner had been replaced just before I bought it, I breathed a sig of relief. If the trans is good from now on, I'll be able to justify putting the coilovers and control arms in the car. I just want to be able to drive the thing for about four years and 100K miles without a disaster or major repiar bill.

When I first got my A8 I asked the local Dealer to lookup up the maintenance records, and they told me that if the work hadn't been done there they couldnt tell me anything.
This was Ed Caroll in Fort Collins, CO
Beware!
Maybe I'll try it with the local dealer here in Alabama since I moved and see if they are anymore helpfull.

Fortunately for me I bought the car from the servicing dealer that replaced all the TB stuff. Lucky me-- 'cuz I would not have trusted anybody on that sort of thing. I don't know how else to really tell if the TB service has been done short of pulling the cover.
