Update on trans fluid change.....
Finally finished the job yesterday. Took about 4 days total. Mainly because the Audi parts dept here ordered the wrong damn filter even after I gave them the correct part #. Anyway, I got out around 7 quarts and put 8 1/4 back in. I knew it was low because of the startup noise and whirring under acceleration (both of which are gone now). I filled it with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Very, very happy with my decision. Shifts?..what shifts...they are sooo smooth. No thump or any other bad behavior so far. Just ultra smooth performance. It feels good not to worry about my car again. Front outer CV joints are next...

Mobil 1 ATF? is it safe for your tranny?
Just completed same job on my A8Q, filter and fluid. Did it about in 3-4 hours, the only difference is that I used VW/Audi ATF instead, this item costed me more then filter and gasket all together. Pricy but I affraid to fill it with anything also. Anyone also used different ATF? What are long term results?

Had my car at ECS tuning for tranny service.... they cracked the plug and said that red fluid came
out of it. I think red is Dextron. I have 170k on my tranny so I dunno if it helped or not.

Re: Mobil 1 ATF? is it safe for your tranny?
i remember reading somewhere that the only trans fluid to be used in an Audi is the original one... i found a cheaper alternative - Pentosin ATF1.
Pentosin makes fluids for audi, bmw and a host of other German carmakers who brand it with their logo and i definately reccomend it
At the end your transmission is very important and expensive. You can do R7D wiht teh other parts i would go with the tried and tested for the transmission though

Normal if car was reasonably warm.
The tranny is filled with an ATF temp of 30-45 oC, but the tranny normally runs 100+ oC. If your tranny was above 45 oC when they cracked the fill plug, the ATF has expanded and should run out.

ATF and filter change
