Well i had to bite the bullet
Well all i had to bite the bullet, got 129000 out of my 97 transmission (mostly highway 60-80mph driving). by the looks of it, i got pretty lucky going as long as i did.
Well i opted for a new rebuilt from ZF Engineering, going to pay alittle more for the transmission, but they were telling me that they rebuild them with a 04 valve body, and some other upgraded parts in our casings.
estimated cost at a local shop is around 4500 with the ZF reman shipped and installation. May be alittle higher than what others are paying but they warrantee for 24 months, and my company foots the bill on it :O)
i will let you know the progress.

very interested in your progress.
I'm going to keep my car another 5 - 10 years and doing the whole tranny replacement ( not rebuilt ) seems like a better Idea to me . I haven't had to jump off the bridge yet but I'm getting my bungie cords ready.
What shop are you using ? I've heard of Olaf in Atlanta, the LI shop and a shop in Jersey. It seems like a good idea to go with a shop that specialized in high end trannys who will stand behind the work. My dealer told me they won't touch an A8 tranny due to bad experiences after they changed fluids. In other words , they won't touch on on the edge of a rebuild / replacement.
Rebuild or replace , that seems to be the question. I'm a newbie at this but my understanding is that a complete replacement gets you new clutches, valve body, torque converter, F125 switch and I assume new seals on the wiring harnesses into the transmission.
Once again, looking forward to hearing how you did. I may be following in your footsteps.
