Default What do you all think of the new wheels?

As I said before, Im starting law school in the fall and money is tight, so I had to get cheapos. Tried to get as much value for the dollar as I could. The interior of the wheel is painted black to match the car and are deceptively thicker then it would appear. I dig 'em.

Good, Bad, So-so? Hope they aren't a disgrace.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!

Default they seem very slender for a two ton car.

I hope they last for you, and don't just bent right away.

I agree they are on the light side, but they the black coloring hides a lot of the meat of the wheel. I like the minimalist look as opposed to what I view as garrish chrome spools. It was a necessary fix as 2 of the 4 on it previously were totalled and I had to get them replaced fast. The cost new for these was only marginally more then getting the old ones reshaped. If they last me 2-3 years, I'll be fine with that. Once I get out of school I'll get some BBS's or something nice.

If anyone needs some replacement Mille Miglia 5 spoke 18's, I have 2 good ones still. 4 sale, cheap!

Default What is the load-capacity of those wheels? It's needs to be at least 630Kg for use under a D2.

If its (much) less, they can develop micro-fractures. After a while a spoke will just snap causing all other spokes to snap a few seconds later...

The consequenses of a wheel braking off are very very...

The amount of "meat" says nothing at all about load-carring capacity. It can only give you a false sense of security.

I have immitation RS4 9-spoke wheels for the A8 but their capacity is to carry 750Kg.
I've looked for that for a while before i found my set.

Spokes can look thin and flimsy but still be very very strong. Don't let looks fool you.
It all depends on choice of materials and casting/build quality.
That is why i will never buy cheap chinese wheels for example.

*Sniffle* No one likes them...just like never getting picked in 2nd grade at the Roller Skating parties during the girl choose boy skate...*cry*

=)

I'll recheck the load capacity, not something I really thought of. How much under 630 would you consider "worrysome". 620 or more like 530?

I rarely have anyone else in the car other then my wife, and shes tiny. Is it less about constant weight on wheels and more about what would happen if I hit a devestatingly bad pothole, or drove on any Alabama highway? Can I make it 3 years? Now you all have me worried and freaked out.

Default To each their own, I think big cars need chunkier wheels or...

...they look like a hippo on high heels.

It also helps to have better looking calipers and painted hats if you are going to show them off. Just MHO.

Default Look pretty good on there, I like that they look nearly like an OEM offering. A little...

...too dainty of a spoke for my personal tastes, but like you said they look good enough and were affordable. Hope they hold up for you.

Congrats, good for you - enjoy. Tx for sharing.

Default See inside..

620 won't kill you. 530 would be way too low. The force with which your empty car pushes down on the front axle is already about 1250 to 1300Kg and about 1200Kg on the rear axle.
During hard braking, this becomes even more on the front-axle.

You do the math...

Mind you that this load-index thing is a point-load and normally the weigth of the car is somewhat distributed over the arch of the wheel by the tire.

The most likely thing to happen with an understrength wheel is that the wheel becomes egg-shaped after a while. This will lead to vibrations during driving. Spokes snapping off is a possibility but less likely (more so if the wheels are way under minimum weight-spec.)
Dents and other deformations caused by driving up pavements or speedbumps for example, are also very likely with under-spec. wheels.

The person that sells a wheel for a car that weighs too much for that wheel is an ***-wipe.
I hope the weight-limit is stamped in the inside of the wheel somewhere. Probably on the rear of a spoke.
If it's not, then ask the reseller but it is likely that he does not know (because he doesn't care).

In Europe, and especially in Germany, Belgium and Switserland, you can run into grave difficulties with the insurance-companies if you have an accident and the wheels are not up to spec. (even if the accident has nothing to do with the wheels).

I'm appalled by the amounts of people that just whack some wheels or spacers under a car and don't think/care about ET values and what that does to the suspension-geometry and braking and so on.

I understand that normal drivers don't know these kind of things but i feel it's the responsability of the resellers to tell these sort of things. Most of them however are only interrested in selling and will say "yes ofcourse" to any question...
