'01 S4 Kid

Not necessarily a bad thing, but I notice nowadays that I can hear the exhaust under lower RPM, high engine load situations.
When revving in place it seems normal, but accelerating to around 40mph if I go briskly through the gears (not above 3500rpm or anything) it sounds like a muscle car. Especially over bridges and through underpasses I can hear the pulses echo (almost like a rapid tap-tap-tap but no, not valves or anything), and it seems to come from the middle of the car (as opposed to the exhaust tips). First thought was hole in exhaust but the car only has 50k miles and no shops/dealers have said anything during inspection.

Is this normal? I will probably have a look at it myself or at a shop, but I really don't think there's a hole.

Probably the center exhaust pipe connection is leaking.

Yeah the 4.2s have that tap tap sound...similar in rhythm like a Harley.

my A8 not S8 sounds kind of like what you describe it..a but but but sound when going over highways, under bridges...I actually kinda like it. BTW it is a muscle car.
