One more thing. After driving the car and getting out of it, the smell of burnt oil seems very potent. I had the dealer look into it, they replaced the water pump timing belt, and the valve cover gaskets while there. The head has been pressure tested and is good, and I'm not blowing smoke, but damn is it embarrassing driving a fantastic car that smells like a 65 Ford pickup.

Check the transmission output seals...
When they leak (and they do) they drip gear oil onto the hot cat converter. The smell is somewhere between motor oil and body odor.

Appreciate the heads up. I looked through it before I bought the car. Really not fealing that any of this is beyond the cars years, it is a '98 with 71K on it, just a tad frustrating with a miserable dealer involved. Thanks for the help!

I see your problem now...
by your signature I see that you have the 4.3 engine. That thing leaks like crazy & there is no way to fix it - ever. Pretty soon you just pour oil in the top and it comes out just as fast through the bottom.
Double check and make sure you don't have the 4.2 engine instead - it's much better :-)

Indeed, I looked it over after Return 4 sent it to me. Looking like I will have to have it done, but, that is it on the money, and now that it was mentioned, it does smell of axel grease more so then straight oil. Thanks for the help everyone...onto my second thread!
