You need the update discs to update the software, but it really doesn't help anything if you aren't retrofitting any new features, and the green screen needs to be unlocked via VCDS before it can be accessed with the three finger salute.

Sorry, that is illegal and it would be unethical to tell you how to commit theft of intellectual property. Just buy the discs, the updates are cheap, and other than the last years maps are cheap enough.

Nonsense, just burn the pirated ISO images and brick your MMI with them to save 30 bucks.

Do you have VCDS? If not, buy the interface cable from Ross-Tech to enable the hidden menu access you seek.

Do not worry about updating the MMI system. My 2004 model has 2007 software and the car runs great. Over 290,000 miles on it. Map CDRom is from 2009 or'10 I use it once in a blue moon. I prefer Waze on my phone as I'm looking for reported police traps.

Take your car to AutoZone or similar and have them test your battery.

The thermostat change basically requires all of the same labor as the timing belt job, you have to pull the crank pulley to get at it among other things. It's listed as a 6.5 hour job. You may as well do the timing belt at the same time if it's more than halfway to it's due. The thermostat is under the bit circled in the photo below.
