2006 or 2007 A8? Input
I'm looking to purchase a 2006-2008 Audi A8 with 125k miles or more. From my research, after that miles alot of major repairs should of been changed. Is the 2006 more reliable?
I know the 2007-2010 TFSI have a timing chain. I've been doing research and I see those engines have a lot of carbon build up. Hows the reliability on the 2006 vs the 2007+ models?? Any major issues to look out for at that mileage? This will be my first time owning a Audi. Any help or advicee will be appreciated!

I don’t think the FSI engine is particularly problematic, but given that it’s a gen 1 direct injection engine, it does suffer from the known problems that come with such systems. It also has the rear timing chain setup which whilst on the A8 isn’t known to be especially problematic, at high miles it will start to become an issue (everything wears out), and it’s a massive engine out deal to fix with expensive parts.
For ultimate longevity and reliability, the timing belt engine is pretty much bulletproof given it uses tech that is as refined and developed as it got before the industry switched over to direct injection systems. Timing belt service needs to be done periodically to realize that longevity, but it’s not the huge deal some folks make it out to be. And it also lumps in the replacement of a bunch of other common wear items like the water pump, thermostat, rollers, tensioners etc that go untouched on chain motors until they fail and then it’s $$$$$.

I did the comparison between the 2 and I picked the 2006, glad I did although I had to retrofit the back up camera.

I have an '07 and see the carbon cleaning as less effort than a timing belt job. I've done this once while replacing oil filter housing seals. I think the engine is fine in either, but I believe the FSI gives you a few more ponies, but maybe not enough to matter to you. You'll probably spend most of your time with items that don't involve the engine. Suspension is a popular thread starter subject, especially in winter.

the 2006 engine has a terrible oil filter location and about 1/2 time i don't get the cover screwed on right and have to start over again. Having said that, the 06 engine is reliabe. After 105k miles i've added to this car, the manifold gasket, PCV valve and a few other small items are all that went south. Now, the suspension is another beast. Unsure if 07 had suspension changes.
I would chose by prior owner and records...always put more value in a 1-owner - Southern owned location - carfax or Audi records.
