22's are mildly oversized for the car, and would constitute a notable drop in ride quality but it would still be a comfortable and usable car, provided you didn't lower it to the point of also having rub issues. Anything more multiplies the symptoms so much as to destroy the whole point of choosing an A8 over lesser options. The gag inducing example above not only has ruined the ride and handling, but almost certainly has a number of mechanical maladies as a side effect of the drastic departure from stock.

I love the look of 22" for sure. I think a staggered rim would be cool too. If you know how to drive it you can leverage that extra rear grip for some fun!
For a square setup use spacers on the rear. For me I love the 0mm front and 35mm rear spaced combo. Now it might be because I am used to driving this in the Porsche 928GTS but for me it transforms the car dynamically but I seem to be the only one with this opinion.
