Default 6HP transmission software versions

Trying to figure out this all out.....

Please see the attached TSB pertaining to this (which concerned the hooting issue).

My 06 A8 has trans code HKT, software part number 4F1 910 156 E, and software version "0100." The "new" software for the HKT/ HZA trans code is "0110." I have "0100."

"0100" is the "new" software code for GCF/ GNU trans codes.

Now, the "old" trans codes are either "0010," "0020," or "0070" or lower. So, by default, "0100" is "new" software.

So, it would seem that I have "new" software, but the incorrect "new" software- both by trans code, and by software part #.

Of course, I showed the dealer this, and they just scratched their heads. Anyone have some insight here?

I am about to change the fluid in the tranny, and need to know whether to use the "old" (gold colored, LifeGuard 6), or "new" (blue, or LifeGuard 6+, which superseded to the green LifeGuard 8) fluid. Given that, from what I can see, I have "new" software, I should have "new" fluid, and so I should use the green juice.

Thoughts people?

Not sure on version numbers but you should need 16 qts of it. I had it done at the dealer and they raped me on trans parts prices. Buy those online from audiusaparts.com but besides that here is a link to the cheapest Green atf i could find.
http://parts.audiofalexandria.com/pr...252dA2%29.html

Out the door I was charged $1988.49.... I will never change my trans fluid again in this car. Just going to drive it into the ground. Fluid should be good for years to come anyway..

As for what to use, you should use the green I am 90% sure you are good to use it as the software flash was only to update for the blue fluid. The green that replaced it is compatible with it as well. I also seen other compatible fluids if you didn't want to use the green or blue fluid, much much cheaper but up to you.

Default Are you sure the fluid is truly compatible/right??

By green, I take it you mean the Audi G-060-162-A2 stuff. But, per the ZF site that is the LifeGuard 8 fluid, which ZF says isn't spec'ed for the 6HP26A. It is for some other ZF six speeds used in Audi's, but not the 6HP26A. Here is the ZF document: http://www.zf.com/na/content/media/u..._11_en0700.pdf See p. 2.

Don't know what Audi USA (as opposed to a dealer) says now, but as of the fluid guide I had from June 2010 it wasn't the recommendation.

ZF documentation continues to separate Lifeguard 6, 6+ (the "blue" stuff) and 8, and I'm not aware ZF has said 8 supersedes 6. They certainly market all three and have literature and product numbers out there for those, as well as the older Lifeguard 5.

My W12 was always spec'ed for "blue" anyway, which seems available for a bit less than "green," so I'm staying w/ blue anyway. Thus, more a 4.2 question I think. (S8's apparently have yet another Audi fluid part number)

While ZF separates, and markets all 3, LifeGuard 6+ didn't stay around very long, and is damn near impossible to find now (especially in the US).

From what I can gather from Audi, they have superseded the green LifeGuard 8 fluid for the blue LifeGuard 6+.

Frankly, because I know that several people have done the software update, while keeping the "old" LifeGuard 6 fluid, I'm almost tempted to just go with that.

Just to throw the idea out there, Red Line says that their D4 ATF is compatible with the 6HP used in these cars, so is that an idea even remotely worth considering? (I'm inclined to say a very emphatic "NO!!!!," but just thought I'd ask)

You are aware that these fluids can be found, under their ZF names, for under $20/ quart, no?

Default $34.72 currently...

at Audi USA Parts (aka Sunset Audi):http://www.audiusaparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=215820

Or, $39.17 from ECS: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/055162A2/ES465419/

Standard fluid listing for the W12, which is the original listing for 6+, before the whole Audi/Jag/BMW V8 6HP26 application "hoot" issue cropped up (not sure if BMW has a hoot issue TSB out like Audi, but I have both seen Jag's TSB for the XJ8 and driven one that pretty clearly had it).

Do you know how they did that? Didn't you say in your other post that you already have new software?

If you go to a transmission shop they will fill it with $7 fluid, probably Mobile. I believe it will work. For how long and how nice may be a different story.

This guys sell ZF ATF.

I believe that with it flashed and refilled with redline it would run just fine. I believe the main difference was the software update and just a "quality new" fluid replacement. Wouldn't hurt to try it, $150 max for a normal flush..

Easy to believe that red will be good while running the blue one.

Since I have "new" software, there should be blue in there anyway at the moment. I was hoping to not pay $40/quart for the fluid, but it's seeming like the safest bet here is to just get the blue stuff and call it a day.
