A8 d3 crankshaft sensor location
2008 a8. Ive searched, and about to purchase a service manual. Does anyone have a picture of where the crankshaft sensor is located. Ive read its on drivers side, usa, forward position on the transmission, but cant seem to locate it. Pictures would be appreciated, google images doesnt seem to show the right transmission and location.

I took off the small heat shield held with 3 t40 bolts just behind the wheel well, still havent seen it. There is another heat shield just behind that one, i havent removed that one yet.

I purchased the 24 hour subscription from erwin (downloading everything!). I still couldn't find this thing even with this image. Looks like it's going to a mechanic. Does anyone recommend a good Indy mechanic in the Reading, PA area?

Yes, you need to remove both
This is lot harder job the you would think. You have to remove both of those overlapping heat shields to get to it. Getting them reinstalled takes a lot of patience. The sensor and wiring swap is no big deal.
Everyone should proactively replace this sensor at 100k. They fail a lot on the D3's and will absolutely leave you stranded. If you're getting any hard or no start symptoms, that's your early warning sign.

I'm working on it again, trying to figure out how to get those heat shields off, do they come undone from the engine bay or through the wheel well. I have the first wheel well cover off.

TStealth32, kind of curious what your symptoms were
My 2004 A8 has been missing sporadically for the past three weeks, then halfway thru driving on a long trip it started missing really bad and just stopped on me. Would not start right away, had to wait about 10 minutes before it would restart. Someone suggested it could be the CPS. So that is why I am curious of your symptoms. Thanks

If the engine cranks but does not start, a fault code will be logged that can be read by VCDS (not by a cheap scan tool).
It read something to the effect of "Crankshaft position sensor implausible signal". This happened after a problem-free drive where we stopped for dinner. After an hour, we got back in the car and crank but no start.
An hour later, it started. However, I noticed slightly longer crank times; 1.5 sec. vs. .5 sec.

I've been getting longer cranks, about 1.5 seconds. Sometimes it will fire right up. It still restarts if the engine is hot, I've only had 2 no starts in the past 10k miles, both times were a cold engine, it kept cranking until I hit stop. Then I tried again, and it started right up. Also, my rpms started jumping slightly, maybe 50-100 rpms. You can see this while accelerating or cruising down the highway. I have no codes on the vcds yet.
Still couldn't find how I get at the heat shield screws from inside the wheel well. I took off the first cover and could not find the 5 or 6 spots to undo the screws. I can see from the engine bay side where they should be, but when I look back under the wheel well, all I see is solid frame where a fastner head should be.
I'm guessing once you have that off, you can reach from the top of the wheel well on down to the bell housing of the transmission.
Dealer quoted $442 to replace it. I feel so close to getting it, just those darn heat shield screws are in my way.
