Default Air Quality Sensor

VCDS reports my Air Quality Sensor has gone bad or has a short. I have reset this fault in the past and it comes back. Is this unit used for determining how much fresh air to let in the cabin?

Yes.

From what I've read it only generally fails if solvents/gasoline get on it, or possibly if filter is contaminated.

$79 here.

This issue turned out much easier than expected. I was going to try to clean the sensor with air and discovered it was unplugged. Thanks to the wonderful Audi technician who last worked on the car (the Dealer).

Now I am wondering about this fault if it was dealer induced as well, which started after dealer worked on instrument panel:

Took all of 2 minutes to get to it: Pull off rubber 1/3 way from front of hood
that seals up left and right panel covering Plenum area (in front of Cabin Air Filter). You only need to pull it off half way. Take off left plastic Panel and look at picture. It is component with Green Wire in Center Back of picture. While in there take out leaves so they do not plug Plenum drains.

I checked this out, took it out, and i have a question i hope you can help me with.

The sensor, the part with holes and white background that points downwards, should it be "open" i mean should it be inside something or just free to the engine bay?

Mine was only in its place as in the picture, but nothing was attached to it on the sensor end, only the wires to the connector.

Hope you undertsand my describing.

Reason for asking is the fault code with "open" that got me wonder about this, and what is short to plus mean?:
