Apple Carplay via D3 MMI 2.0
Been futzing with this on and off again for a while now -- finally put in all in the car today! My video is just the result, I included some other links to the needed equipment, process, etc.
Thanks to 3dogs1monkey for figuring this all out and doing the heavy lifting. His video on how to do it is attached. There is a second link included on how to get the touch screen installed inside the MMI screen to allow it to continue to retract...!
I would encourage anyone doing this to try to duplicate the specific equipment 3dogs1monkey is outlined. Specifically, the Tanix Android box and the eBay touchscreen. I didn't need to run power to the USB hub and got a different one, but did try different Android TV boxes (two of them) before buying the exact Tanix he mentions to get everything working 100%.
My only deviation is that I installed the Tanix box in the spare tire well and then ran 2 USB extension cables into the cabin/front (for the phone, touchscreen, etc.)
Super happy with this. New tech in an old car (that I love.)

Getting touchscreen inside the MMI screen so it will retract (you may need to use translate):

Awesome job! Looks great.
I’ve pretty much given up on my CarPlay quest. I’ve got an early car without a backup cam so for me it’s just too much work so I’ve lost the motivation. Also it’ll never be as good as the CarPlay in my cheap and cheerful e-Golf, which would just end up annoying me. Haha.

They are 10 feet:
The Android box is in the spare tire well, and I routed the USB to through the trunk into the back left of the rear seat. From there, I pulled the rear seat up and ran it under the carpet near the 'hump' between the two rear seats (under the rear vents) and then into the space under the dual armrests for the front seats. It meets up with the USB from the touch screen there and the Carplay dongle and other usb hub all sit there.
Thanks again for all the info Louis.

I got the USB -> Headphone jack and a standard 3.5mm mic. I forgot to hook it up, though so I can't say for certain that is works or not. I'm not sure if I'll ultimately put it in -- I don't use voice text really and leave the standard Audi MMI/Bluetooth on for voice calls. If I plug it in I'll let you know..!
