audi A8 w12 dyno results
Came across this post while doing an internet search and was a good read.
I've got a manual W8 here in the UK and having been through 5 engine swaps, ECU-maps, custom airboxes and exhaust changes I thought it might be worth sharing some of my experiences.
ECU-maps deliver very little I have found. Other than smoothing some of the irregularities of fuel impurities that the manufacturers build in and setting the car up to run on 99/100 octane fuel there isn't a massive amount of power to be had. Changing the maps to alter the advance/retard of the cams through the cam adjusters also doesn't deliver huge gains. With the cam adjuster being quite fragile this increases risk and in one of my engines resulted in failure.
The airbox/s can be re-worked although with the very high engine bay temperatures the re-work has to involve direct feed of air otherwise intake temperatures go up.
The exhaust can be re-worked and the best way to go would be custom manifolds with fast cats and larger diameter pipes although the cost of this is prohibitive and removal of the engine is normally needed to get them off. I saw the video of the car without the exhaust system and yes it does sound poor, but the W engines are flat plane cranks so will always sound great with the right system. Having pipes on does even the sound out and it will sound great. Here's a short video of my car leaving a show....the extra 4 cylinders can only sound even better.
Regards the engine internals the conrods are different in the Bentley to N/A cars as I have checked with damaged Bentley engines. This is no doubt because of the higher stresses that go through them on the turbo cars. There is also the issue that the bottom ends of all W engines are factory sealed so there are no loosening/tightening patterns, no torque settings and no shells available. A company has re-built one for Turbo modification of a W12 Touareg using custom machined Titanium rods, but this is no doubt at crazy cost.
In all of this the conclusion that I came to was that if you want more power from a W engine then you sell it and get something thats already fast or just enjoy it for what it is. I love my W8 and given I'm in the process of putting it's 5th engine in some would say I'm mad, but not mad enough to try and get more power out of it.
Cheers
David
