Assuming it has no leaks and the rest of the system is working normally, the only way to fix it is to take it to a shop with an AC recharge machine that evacuates and then fills it with the exact amount of R134 by weight. Any other diy method just doesn’t work. Even Louis our resident skeptic will reluctantly concede on this one.
+1. Relative with my W12 just had it done last week at a shop with the proper machine (evacuate and recharge by weight) for all of $80.

"Yes Dave", if the system is totally evacuated, ie, no pressure, no air, no water, 620g +/-20g ~ 2x12oz cans - will sure make the system runs ice cold, my wife had to deflect the ice cold vents toward me since I'm hot blooded in 95F ambient.
I have to lose with the system only runs with exact weight of Freon, only Audi A8. And where do they only charge $80, MP4? Try $100-$120.
Hook up and evacuate already $50.
I'm buying an evacuation machine since I know exactly how it works now.
Btw, it took 5 minutes to clear all the hot air inside the cabin when parked in 95F heat.
Cheers,
Louis

Agreed - where is the $80 treatment? A chain that might be here in the St. Louis area? That's a good price.
Thanks for the advice guys. I will have the pros do the evacuate and refill.

Mine works fine, gauge shows 35 psi. I need to drive out to the Bay Area to get it filled.
I need to ask my guy how much to pull down and refill.

National Tire & battery wants $178 to do it. Where was the $80 service?

$80 was local small mechanics' shop in San Jose CA area; not a chain or the area footprint.

I would buy a vacuum pump + manifold + 21.3 oz of r134a and do it myself.
Cheers,
Louis

You realize venting R134a to atmosphere from an auto a/c system is technically illegal, right? So unless you are going to pump into a capture device... ? The can type DIY stuff assumes a depleted or repaired system, but not the do it by weight method for Audis that requires the system purge to get the total weight after the service. No, the ozone police don't get out to the home garages, but certainly checked at shops. Not as harmful as R12 was, but by no means inert or close to it.

At the shop, how do they discard the Freon? Silently or with chemical?
