Thank you for this post, this finally could be the explanation of my mysterious coolant leak which I have posted.
Thanks

Is this the pipe? The suspected gaskets?

I would be eternally grateful to you if this is my issue, what I'm dealing with:

#14 is the stupid $3 ring (the person that drafted this drawing is as competent as the person that designed the chemical compound, how can all my other cars last 200k+ without any ring failure?)

Just checked with ElsaWin and all 3 coolant pipes need to come out then the rear chain covers. Fortunately step one is not "remove engine".

Confirming, the pipe shown below and the related gaskets (13 and 14) should not be causing coolant getting into oil. I have dealt with pipe 13 in a couple of 4.2 port head removals. It is external to the motor so no way coolant from inside that cross pipe/tube should be able to get into oil.

But yes, from preceding reply 23, little pipe 3 and o-rings 2 and 4 passing through the chain drive area on an FSI motor should be in an oil area--if that unnumbered cover is on the back of the cylinder head covering part of the chain drive up in the camshaft area. Port injection 4.2's don't have the rear chain drive at all, since they had the camshaft belt drive in front, The S8 5.2 of course is chain, so apparently the similarity here to the 4.2 FSI.

Well guys, its been a great journey with our S8, but it is time to part with it. Have hardly driven it in the last year. Got 3 kids now, swapped our Q7 tdi last year for a 2011 GL550 which I absolutely love. We have 2 4 door full size sedans. Ill be selling the S8 and looking to pickup an 05 CL55, keep it as the rare date night car.
The car has been great after the coolant ordeal. Sounds awesome with the 3" exhaust, excellent high speed cruiser. Comfy, quiet etc.
But after having done some maintenance items on the GL, i have become very fond with the way Mercedes plans their vehicles. IMO far superior to audi...and the seat leather is real hide..not bonded leather like in the audis...smh.
Touching up a couple small niggles, final detail and then shell be heading off to bring a trailer to have the free market determine its worth.
Adios for now...I may be back at some point again though
