Cost input on 4.2 FSI oil leak at dealer
I took my 2008 A8L (120K miles) in first thing Tuesday to get the 26J2 recall work done, a “two day job”. I waited a while to make sure the dealership had performed a few of these recalls, as I did not want to be the guinea pig. My advisor said that they had already done several. He is now saying mine should be done Monday.
After reading the other posts on the cat recalls, I asked him what other items should be done to piggyback labor with the engine/transmission dropped/out. My advisor (who used to drive an ‘09 A8) reported late Wednesday that nothing else was needed, but there was a small oil leak up top. The emailed diagnosis was predictable: “Oil filter flange and valve cover gaskets leaking.” There was no mention of right or left on the valve covers, or if they were recommending replacements because the gaskets had all failed or just because it was smart to do them all at the same time.
The prices quoted were higher than those quoted to other posters here: $821.91 for the oil filter flange gasket and $1,296.48 to replace the valve cover gaskets. I saw other posters were given dealer estimates of $650 for both valve covers. Even with the great how-to articles and videos, I have to admit to myself that I do not have the room, time, tools or know-how to do this work, so I will be dependent on the professionals.
My questions to the group: Any ideas why my numbers appear so much higher? In other words, would these numbers make perfect sense if other common wear items in that area were also replaced, like the oil cooler tube (and should I try to overnight a Gruvenparts aluminum oil cooler tube)? Without a more detailed itemization, which I will ask for tomorrow, I am struggling to determine if I’m being high-balled or if they are just oversimplifying their quotes. Your expert thoughtful feedback is most appreciated, as usual.

Posters like Mister Bally (from the Midwest generally) note pricing variances in the area simply based on bigger city proximity or local competitive factors. Here in NorCal the prices are way high to start. If you get the dealer's labor rate, you will likely ferret out the primary difference, since the parts prices and book hours will be right out of the computer.
For at least valve covers, that is pretty generic work as Audi's go. Why not just find a good local indy and have that work done while looking more closely at the other? If work done to conclusion, chance to get an oil change too while at it, unless you DIY there. If indy is bring-your-own-parts friendly, order up a Reinz or similar gasket set for fewer $ but OE quality. On the other hand, if work is guaranteed for some time/miles, you likely want to have them supply parts.

So today I called my local Audi specific mechanic, who quoted $750 for the oil filter flange gasket and $750 (total) for both valve gaskets, assuming both need to be replaced. How is there $550 difference between the dealer and the indie? The coffeemaker at the dealer is a little fancier, I suppose.

Hoooold on....1300$ to replace the valve cover gaskets? 1,300?!?! and the engine is OUT ALREADY?! Jesus I will do them for like 200$. Wowowowo
Even in vehicle...Thats maybe a 3-4 hour job doing it your first time..Took me 4 hours on the S8, due to the rear bolts taking almost 30 mins each...

Valve cover gaskets are easy and cheap. Especially with the engine out, should take them 30 minutes. Buy a low profile socket for the rear bolts and you'll be done in a few hours.

im going to my indy because the dealer lost there mind!
My car is in for the recall as well and they lost it! They were really going to try and charge me 907 dollars for serpentine belt and roller WHILE MOTOR IS OUT! I called my indy and he couldn't stop laughing!! Even at this moment im still trying to figure out why they are charging me for the full times labor when.... THE MOTORS OUT! Luckly, my indy can do it for less than 580 dollars start to finish... with OEM parts.
