cup holder removal
2006 A8L
Something (coin, etc) is preventing the damped cover on my cup holder from closing. It's in the up position and it moves slightly but someone is making it stick. I don't want to force it as I'm pretty sure something will break. Since I often rest my wrist on the lid to turn the dial for radio or other function, it would be nice if it could go down.
Unlike an ash tray which generally just pulls out, I can't find a way to remove this. I hope I don't have to take apart the counsel
Any thoughts?

You have to pull the entire piece as it's all one. Pull the ashtray and the single T25 (IIRC) screw. Gently pull up and towards you starting at the top of the section and then down both sides. Finally it will slide forward a bit at the back by the cup holders. They then screw to the bottom of the unit.
There are 4-5 harnesses plugged in also that you may or may not need to undo. Nothing hard there.

Are you talking about the dual cup holder just behind the gearshift and MMI on the console? Just pull the black plastic insert up and out - carefully - and you should be able to see whatever is blocking the lid from closing.

You will have to take the complete console out as listed above as the door slides down and under and access is blocked. I have had to do this many times. It's not hard as long as you follow the steps described above.
Be careful that the clips that hold the console into the car do not pop out and fall into the transmission tunnel as it is a pain in the *** fishing them out.
