Different transmission
I have a 2005 audi a8l 4.2l quattro with 152000 miles on it and I'm wondering if there is a better quicker transmission that would fit. Possibly a dct?
I have a HHV transmission

In short, no. Buy a different car if you want a faster shifting transmission. Something with the ZF 8HP like the D4 has.

@DarkoLeon ,
Actually you may be able to use the ZF 6HP-28A, which is a upgraded "Quick Shift" version of the 6HP-26A, the 28 is used in the Bentley GT Supersports, my Audi A8L W12 has the 6HP-26A, and so did my Bentley GT with it's original TT W12 engine, but I rebuilt my GT with all 2011 Supersports drive train, and the 26 and 28 are identical on the outside, so all axles, drive shaft, and mounting points line up perfectly.
And the 6HP-28A has a 40/60 power split front to rear, whereas the ZF 6HP-26A has 50/50, I can feel the difference in the 60/40, able to kick that rear out a bit... 😁
So, if your 4.2 has a 6HP-26, then I think the 28 would work.
If you decide to stick with the 26, I have a super low mileage (just under 10k miles) ZF 6HP-26A HVP out of my Bentley available.
EDIT: I just looked up the Audi A8L 6.0 and 4.2, they both share the 3.32 final drive ratio, whereas I know the Bentley has 3.52 final drive ratio, so that would mean a swap of the front final drive on a 6HP-28, or the 6HP-26A transmissions, or a swap of the rear differential gears to match the transmission.
I also have the complete rear differential out of the GT with 3.52 to the matching transmission, it would be interesting to see if the rear differential is exactly the same measurement and mounting wise as the A8L.

Interesting discussion here. I'm also curious about interchangeable parts. 05 A8 with a little front end damage and transmission issues and 01 A6 that I was hoping to do a facelift on.
