Engine Decarbonization?!
I was told that decarbonizing an engine will improve gas mileage as well as engine performance. Is that ture? How is that done? How much does it cost to do it? it it worth doing it for a 2004 A8L?

That's right, if there are serious deposits. In order to clean them cylinder heads has to come down and be completely disassembled. Best think to do is to use some injector cleaner, Techron for example. It will clean injectors and improve performance and millage. Just don't expect miracles.

You do not have direct fuel injection, you have the style that sprays the fuel in the intake, it mixes with intake air and this mixture passes by the valve stem, cleaning everything. It's the car's with FSI (direct injection) that have issues with carbon build up. Nothing for you to worry about. If you put Techron in, it helps keep the injectors clean and prevents fault codes in the future due to misfires.

FSI engines are more likely to have deposits, but all engines can and will have them if oil is coming into intake. Worst ones are inside the combustion chamber. They work as a glow plugs causing self ignition/detonation/pinging and eventually burning pistons and cylinder head. I doubt that ever happened to an A8 engine.
