The first month of driving the S8
This car you have to drive to appreciate, so far I got about 1k in the odometer, I feel more connected to the car than the 07 A8; it speeds up nicely as you wish in a very smoothly manner. This car was made on 01/07.
1). Things about the car that seem new to me; EPA is 14/20, not 15/21 as all the car magazines suggest, so the gas guzzler tax is $2100.00 not the $ 1700.00 original number when I ordered the car.
2). 4453Lb is the shipping weight according to the certificate of origin for a vehicle (with about 100 Lb wrapping stuff on the car. I couldn't see the car when it just came to dealer's lot, except the wheels, every inch, from bottom to the top was wrapped up.), so the curb weight should be 4353?
3). the battery level check is not on the mmi as my 07 A8 has.
4). In real daily driving long term EPA is 14.5 mpg so far with 70% city and local, 30% highway. The EPA is as good as my 04 Allroad 4.2; the A8 SWB gave me 16 mpg.
5). The outer two exhaust pipes are open all the times; the two inner two are controlled by the valves with some sort of devices attached to the pipes.
6). The car equipped with the Yokohama 265/35/ZR20; when I took the car from the dealer the front and rear tires got the pressure of 46 and 45 psi, I felt quite harsh on the road, so I lower the psi to 42 and 40, now, the car is as comfortable as the A8, and I don't feel any ill effect on the road, the S8 manual suggests 42 and 38.
7). This S8 has the lowest ground clearance of 3.7 inches, by comparing the similar cars I had driven so far, with all setting modes except the lift mode at 4.7, for the lift, if the car goes above 62, it will lower to 3.7. There is no E63 AMG or M5 for me to test to compare, the E550 I tested with RWD has 4.1, and the E55 AMG I owned before had 5.4 to my memory.
To me, all the luxury sport cars that produce 400hp to 500 hp on the markets, the S8 has the best price, the EPA, and balance, S8 gives you the luxury, comfort and sporty. The S8 has the solid chassis to the extreme; I don't feel the body roll even in fast cornering or sharp turn. It is a good car indeed
