Frugal German engineering??
The battery recently gave out in the remote control on the key of my 2004 A8L. The service advisor told me this little problem could only be solved by ordering an entire set of new keys from Germany, which he proceeded to do. This worked ok with minor inconvenience/waiting/reprogramming time and was under warranty. But I plan to keep the car a while and I suppose this exercise would cost well north of $300 out of warranty. Hugely different practice from the German engineers I used to work with, who would be aghast at such waste.
Anybody have a better fix or a different experience?

See the info following. Someone posted this re: replacement battery. Not sure if it's for D2 only, o
or also D3. It's absurd to rekey the car for a dead battery.

Re: Or how about crazy dealer ripping of orifices?
"Absurd" perhaps understates my reaction. I checked the manual and it simply said to take the "dead" key to the dealer. No battery replacement clues. I remember my Lexus dealer of yore simply mailed me a fresh battery to install. I suppose recoding might be required after a power lapse unless the key has some non-volatile memory.
I called Audi advocate to run a swab on this and was promised a response "within a week....."

Re: no, there was a recall (TSB) on these puppies
Many thanks for the info. Perhaps a dealer IS right occasionally. Very hard to believe that Audi AG would replace these expensive items unless absolutely necessary. Of course this leaves me wondering how to replace tha battery next time it tires...
