Default fuel pump noise level

When I am standing outside of my car at idle I can hear the fuel pump quite distinctly. I would think it should be silent. In past Audi models being able to hear the fuel pump meant bad things to come...is an audible fuel pump par for the course (I hope) for a D3?

Mine is silent on my 2004. On my old 1987 Audi 5000CS quattro, I replace three fuel pumps. Loud noise means it is going to fail. On one, I waited almost six months before a few stumbles of the engine and then I replaced it.

What does the noise sound like? I never heard anything before or after my fuel pump went bad. Why do you think you hear the fuel pump?

There is a hum from the gas tank area that can only be the fuel pump. When the ols 5 cylinder Audi pumps were on their way out they could be heard inside the car, and this sounds similar to early stages of pump failure. But I was hoping it was semi-common to hear the pump outside the car on a D3 with 75K. But I guess not. The A8 SHOULD be silent.

Default Silent, and I'm pumping almost 50% more fuel under some conditions...

on a 6.0.

Like others, I haven't really heard noise on an Audi fuel pump for a really long time, since a 75 C1 that was literally the first year Audi injected its then larger car (the 100LS 4 banger) with straight CIS.

Typically noise = failure to come. Maybe tomorrow, maybe in a year. When it does, the car isn't usually going to move again when it gives out. If you're lucky, it's at home or work. If you're not, who knows where you could be, and it's not a part found at at a local NAPA store...
