How to display what gear you are in when in D or S? Look at this pic!

I know it is possible because I've seen it on *some - not all* 05, 06 and 07 models - the current gear number is displayed to the right of the PRNDS (see attached pic) in the driver information display when D or S is selected.
And these car's don't even have the latest MMI version like my car with the 4140. How is it done? Is there a vag-com setting perhaps?

Idea on what this might be
Doesn't the display component itself vary based on adaptive cruise vs. not? Mine has adaptive and has the gear display; as a 2006 W12 though I have the newer "big screen" center display that may not have made it to all the D3's until later on. Specifically, I have the upside down semi trapezoid one that I think superseded the rectangular color one (at least w/ adaptive) that superseded the rectangular monochrome one.
Bruce + 8202632, do you have adaptive cruise? And Puf, under my speculation do you indeed have it?

Supplemental from 2006 owner's manual: shows it for both...
adaptive w the "big screen" display and otherwise with the rectangular display like in the original post picture.
With some warnings the display shows it missing but in normal operation it shows it there. In my car, it isn't there when parked, but of course appears in normal D (or S) mode when driving.

No, I don't think it's related to adaptive cruise - see my original pic
I've seen it on both types with or without adaptive cruice (ie. large DIS vs. small).
We have to figure this out! It's in the "system" somewhere!
