My early 06 facelift has done 190,000 miles and is as sound as a pound. *knocks wood*
Not much has gone wrong and has been reasonable to fix thanks to these forums, google and not buying stuff from the dealer.

I see no problem buying a european car with high mileage. My 99 A8 I bought with 143k and sold with 207k on it, running fine. If you get a decent price on the car to begin with, in the end it will probably be cheaper for repairs than making payments on a newer car. These car are very reliable, and chances of big ticket items like engine or trans going is pretty low. If you can turn a wrench and fix some things yourself, then the cost of ownership can be very low on these.

Just go into this knowing what COULD be.
1. The extended warranty they are offering you on a 150K mile car isn't worth much. It's an inclusionary warranty; meaning that it spells out exactly what they will cover. A lot of the common items that may go bad (and be expensive to fix) won't be covered. Also, companies try to weasel out of covering items;
2. Be aware that these cars can be extremely expensive to repair. Even small items like door closers and trunk motors can be a thousand or more. Many older cars have small items that remain broken because owners won't spend the money getting them fixed. Large ticket items like motor or trans can approach or exceed the value of the car. Just go into it with eyes wide open.
They are fascinating machines, but complicated.
Good Luck!!

it depends....
I have always driven American vehicles because thats what I grew up knowing. I want to make the switch to German! I am looking at a 05 A8L because its always been a dream car of mine. A long time family friend has one at the local audi dealer. It has 140k miles on it... I know that is an awful lot. He told me of the issues they have but has the service records from audi and says everything that goes out has been replaced and the car is awesome. It sounds good but can anyone tell me from experience? Should I? or Shouldn't I?
But everything at a price. And the price should be commensurate with the miles. And no price is cheap enough if the condition and services are not what they should be, so thats the starting point. But tell us what they're asking for the A8 in question...that way you can then gain by the collective buying knowledge of forum members. Who knows, maybe a member has a better deal to offer you on his car, but who can offer advice if you dont talk price ?

Well said, Awdinut. I wish this forum incorporated features similar to Facebook where I could simple "like" someone's comment. I see so many great comments on this board on a daily basis.
