Default Ignition coil question...

Just changed my spark plugs today and everything went smoothly, but just a quick question I have. Last year had my ignition coils replaced under the recall, now all of them were shiny and new with the exception of one...it was the first one on drivers side, the one easiest to access. The metal part that goes into the cylinder was all brown spotted, not shiny like all the others...anyone have a clue why this would be? Thanks

Usually recalls only replace failed, or know that it will fail components. Not always though. I think this is one of those cases. Replace as needed.

I noticed something similar on mine, after the recall. Not all of them were replaced. It's been awhile, so I don't remember which ones were, and which ones were not. But, I definitely had more than one that was not replaced.

Default Hard to be sure, but...

I expect it was replaced. The recall was emissions related, so contra to the other reply, I expect all were done. Big bucks fines would be a possible result of any funny business. I can't see really them on the W12 under the manifold, but I remember the paperwork said all were done.

Back to what I think was your question, hard to know what happened w/out seeing it. Given you say it is in front, you could look at hood, grille, radiator ducting and the like in that area and see if it nets to a passageway to that plug coil. Road grime would be another clue. Thus, could be things like water ingress (or the periodic bug splat for that matter) scalding off the metal surface. Nearby leaky hose of some type is another scenario. Those are just speculation though; more broadly I would look at what's different about the placement of that coil relative to the others.

The recall was in 2 stages. At first they only replaced the failed coil(s). Later, if you had a failure, they would replace all the older coils. It's possible, that like mine, one coil was replaced earlier, than the other 7. All of them should have the newer part number though.
