need cam aligning help

Default need cam aligning help
can't align driver side cam, when aligning tool is removed cam "springs" forward will not stay at proper aligned position. Any thoughts? (A8 D3)

What are you doing? Why are you removing aligning tool before the timing belt is in its place?

no worries, just "grab" it with the cam bar and pull it back. It sometimes takes me a couple of tries if the other side is off a hair. The left cam will hold in position a lot easier than the driver side.

Are the cam sprockets free to rotate? If you have the timing belt on the sprockets, same comments applies.

changing timing belt...newbie..... when old belt was removed sprockets stayed in place was just a little worried. Thanks

He sure did (Benji) get help. A8 CT mentioned to just turn it back slightly as this is normal with this engine. I concur as I experienced the same thing when I replaced my belt and all of the associated stuff in mine almost two years ago.

And when you turn it back it will stay there? Why would you use alignment tool if you are going to play with it afterwords?

You have to rotate one or both cams to get the holes to line up. The driver side usually does not stay in place.
