Remote Radar and Laser Diffuser Install
). The detector itself is a model from 2008, which I also used in my last car. The install would work just as well with the newer model of the remote detector now available. Here is an overview of the sensors. They aren't seen when looking at the front of the car, except if you shine a flashlight (or camera flash) on them:

Here is the radar sensor, showing the brackets I made, and also the location of where it gets mounted. You have to move the right horn over and remount it, and the same also for the outdoor temp sensor, in order to be able to get the radar head positioned dead center behind the grill:

Here are the laser diffusers (x2), showing the brackets I made, and how they mount behind the grill. Unlike the radar sensor which gets mounted to some framing members on the car, the diffusers have to be mounted to the front nose assembly of the car itself in order for them to be positioned just behind the grill:

Here is the trim piece I made to mount the radar display inside the ashtray in the center console. Note that the ashtray door still opens and closes after the radar display is installed. For stealth reasons (including the temptation of thieves) I leave my ashtray door closed most of the time since the warning tones from the detector are plenty loud enough. If I am unsure whether its a false alarm or not, I'll pop open the tray and have a quick look and the display. The digital display is made up of red segmented leds so it matches the Audi dash lighing. I also have a remotely mounted mute switch on the left side of the driver's seat (not pictured in these photos). So I can mute the detector without having to look away from the road. I mounted it so that my hand naturally moves over it when I reach down for it:

Here the detector is hardwired to the rear of the fuse panel on the driver's side dash (red shrinkwrap is used over the soldered connection). Switched accessory power is used so the detector turns on and off automatically with the car.

This is just a photo showing the front nose removed so I can work on mounting the radar and laser diffuser heads. I found that a few unopened bags of mulch came in handy to hold the nose up straight and keep it steady. Clearly I dont recommend this install job for the weekend tinkerer. I was a pro-audio installer for 15 years when I was younger so I know how to work on an install like this. I'd rate the overall difficulty factor at about a 9 out of 10, but thats mostly because I had to make up all the bracketry from scratch including figuring out how everything would mount:

Yet detectors are illegal in some places.
Best advice:
If you want to fly, go to a track day instead of risking life and property on the road.
Getting there five minutes quicker isn't worth it.
Pilot your Geman supercars wisely
As to the suggestion that one must always remain within the posted speed limit, whatever that number might be, or how it was decided, and regardless of whether road traffic and weather conditions would in fact permit safe operation at higher speeds than posted, that is a debate I will avoid engaging into at this time.
In any event, thanks for the positive feedback about my install. At some point I may try to locate a diferent plastic material to fabricate another trim panel around the radar display that matches better in texture to the switch surfaces nearby to it. Although since mostly I keep the tray door closed, its not super high on my list of immediate 'must-dos'. If anyone is interested in tackling the project feel free to PM me with questions. I did make a template of the trim plate that I can duplicate for you. All thats needed to cut it out is a dremel tool, a nice 9901 or 9903 carbide bit, a pair of round and flat bastard files, and a steady hand.
