Put more information, by adjusting you mean adjusting the height up and down and distance to and fro of the steering wheel? And that's when you hear a click? Mine doesn't make any noise besides the noise the motor or electric noise when I adjust.

on up and down, its like theres a gear making contact, feels like theres some resistance, like 2-3 clicks per second.
on in and out, its a bit squeaky too i notice.

If it's under warranty have them check it again, mine doesn't click at all. If it sin't under warranty then set it to your preference and leave it

theres a convenience mode (or something) that moves the wheel
out of the way upon entry and exit so it moves often anyway.

Yeah, I used to have that on. I just disabled it because of all the short trips I take and I don't need any problems in the future. Like i said if it is under warranty go get it fixed. A clicking noise is not normal at all.

Default No unusual clicking noises on mine ever

Ditto on my 2000 A6 4.2 with motorized column, and never any repair issues for that area either coming up on 11 years since I bought it new.
