Below are pictures of all four sensors & linkage on my 2004 D3. You will see the linkage attached to the suspension control arm or trapezoidal link or whatever "scientific sounding" term Audi decided to call it. The sensor/encoder is attached to the frame or something rigidly attached to the spaceframe.

All photos are through the wheelwells with wheels removed. Nomenclature is using North American terms.

When I lifted up my car's rear, I paid close attention to those parts, assuming they could be sensors (didn't look like usual suspension parts). And they all looked to be intact without any damage...hmmm...

I did try the "lowing" through VAG-COM and successfully lowered the car on all corners, but the rear right corner still seems a bit lower. And there is no fault on suspension. Good thing is, car drives/stops stright without any hint of anything out of going ordinary. Interesting...

 

My '04 has the same issue when parked, doesn't appear to be a systematic problem.

 

I suspect the J197 module . It may not be controlling the valves correctly and may need to be replaced.
That would make it a systemic problem, no offense meant toward member MarcsA8, above.

 

Had some time to get into the garage and work on my uneven A8 suspension. Using VCDS i performed the Module 34 leveling procedure and the ride level improved greatly. However, while doing the procedure, I noticed that the left front strut did not have enough air pressure in it to function correctly. Since this was the shock with the corroded/broken pins in the ride height sensor, I need to investigate further to find out why the strut is not getting enough air pressure.

 

Ive not seen any impact on ride height with uneven dead weight in the trunk. And I carry a lot of dead weight there.
