A family friend had a 5000 - the battery was located underneath the rear right passenger seat (if I recall correctly)... Anyhow heavy passenger in the rear seat caused the battery to short and the car burned to the ground in a matter to minutes... Anyone else have a similar experience?

The correct battery has a cover over the positive battery post that prevents the seat cushion spring from contacting the battery post. Also, the proper battery is quite short and has an exterior vent hose connection. Sounds like something was not proper with your friend's car. If someone else did it, I smell a pesky lawsuit.

And this has what exactly to do with the "unintended acceleration" thread discussed here? There is a forum for the 100 / 200 / 5000 / V8 models

I had a 5000 (in Europe it was called the 100) that ran flawlessly for 110,000 miles until my brother crashed it on black ice - he walked away without a scratch; the car was 2 feet shorter according to him ... I never heard of any 100 or 5000 burning to the ground due to battery issues, and there were quite a few around in Germany when I lived there ...

Point taken - there were three other posts regarding the 5000, simply adding to the discussion. Nice to hear about your 5000 though!

I had both a 5000 and a 200. No unintended acceleration or fires in either one. I got them pretty cheap because people had a trust issue with them. I ran to 146k on the 5000 and 289k on the 200. Both were still in great shape when I sold them - no rust, great paint.
