Mishar you're awesome I really hope you or someone else know how to get the key out.

Note that the vehicle MUST be in Park.

You could also get a cigarette lighter plug, and feed power in that way, should be enough to get things opened.

Ok I finally got my trunk open, thank you all for your advice.

Lessons learned: If the key is locked in the ignition on the left side closest to the steering wheel. Remove the cover get a paper clip turn the key to the left. Place the paper clip inside the hole. "Here's the catch" the paper clip goes inside the hole there's another hole within the hole. Place it inside and push toward the key and pull the key out.

In the event the master key doesn't open the trunk use a long broom stick and use the emergency latch on the right side of the back of the trunk.

Hopefully this will help someone in the event they have a dead battery. After all the hassle it really wasnt thst hard. Take care and God bless.

Good news!

Now the $64 question is: What caused the battery to go dead?
If it is the original it is well past the need for replacing.

Keep an eye on the battery level meter in MMI.
While it's not terribly accurate, anything less than 100% indicates an issue.

I guess using the remote start always has other advantages.

Remote start....on an A8? Or do you mean keyless start? Not a fan of keyless systems. Far to much risk of getting stranded if for example you drop your wife off shopping, and she has the key in her bag (and it's not obvious you have forgotten your key as the car opens and starts normally).. Off you merrily go to the autoparts store or wherever and park up. Good luck trying to get it started again.

Good that you know this now. You won't need it ever again.

In the event the master key doesn't open the trunk use a long broom stick and use the emergency latch on the right side of the back of the trunk.
I would investigate this further. Key has to open drivers door too. Unless it is not an original key.

Broom stick would be recommended if you didn't exclude it by "trunk full of bags" in your first post.
