That was weird! UFO sighting
I was just driving home tonight from the city and was playing with a AMG CL55 on the Hutchinson PRKWY and I saw the coolest thing. He got in front of me, (took him about seven tries) and we were barrelling along when he came up behind some slow moving traffic. Suddenly he hits his brakes and there is this bright red flashing coming from where his license plate used to be. Then a bright blue triangle (upside down) flashes about six times really fast and then his license plate moves back down and covers the lights. What the hell was that? Is it dynamic brake lights or a special hazard light? It would be a great way of keeping tailgaters offf your butt.

Maybe, just maybe, its part of either the Distronic Cruise System
or the Pre-Safe system(anticipates a possible accident). I would believe that hard braking might activate one of the systems. Just a wild guess.

Some people have sliding or flip-down license plates. Maybe that was it.
I had a flip-down license plate, years ago. It was neat. But I was jealous when I saw a 7-series BMW with a rear plate that slid sideways, and underneath it was an LED set-up that could display letters, like a sign. That BMW was from downstate NY. Maybe somebody there does some fancy set-ups. Some practical "pimp my ride" modifications...
Here is a motorcycle discussion board where somebody asks for the link to a disappearing license plate:

And here is the link to the site that has the motorcycle flip-down license plate set-ups:

GS LEDs...
Ghetto Superstar LEDS.
Definitely not a factory option. apparently, he (CL55) switched it on as I highly doubt that there's enough sophisticated electronics that would trigger such a device based on calculated speed reduction and braking threshold. gimmicky at best.
you could do the same. just buy the unit, have a stereo place rewire it so that when you turn your rear fogs on, the device does what it does.
or better: just use your rear fogs. turn them on for tailgaters. i've done this for years and it works 90% of the time. for the other 10%, if they don't get the message, they have a mission so it's best to just let them be (ie. get out of their way).
