Who can retrofit AMI to 2005.5 A8 in the SF Bay Area?
Stevens Creek Audi says it cannot be done and Carlsen said they are not sure and never did it before so I am looking for a dealer or local mechanic that can do it for me.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I did it myself on my 2006
If you are on a recent MMI rev and have a VAG COM for one quick tweak to tell it you now have two drive units (the CD and the AMI; it thinks of it as a drive), it is perfectly do able.
Attached is my prior post on it. Same link as in my autosig.
You might check Rector in Burlingame and see if they have done it. But, if you do it yourself you can source the parts from Riverside (aka Audi Parts Depot) for a fair amount off dealer list; still expensive.
Are you on a recent MMI rev? If not, get there first. I was at 3360 when I did it--the one where they update it to fix the "surround sound issue" so many of us happened to have, which in turn killed the upfront lawyer warning screen.

2006 AMI self install

By the way, Stevens Creek might want to learn the car/AMI a bit better
Here is a scan of the cover page of the Audi install instructions--it is retrofittable all the way back to the first D3 that rolled off the line in Europe (2003). I don't have a lot of tolerance for dealers who spout this stuff when they don't take the time to look into it. But, if they don't know what they are talking about and haven't done it, move on. You don't need to pay for a training exercise too.
Only typical issues are if AMI needs updating and if it has an older glove box that doesn't fit the second drive unit. If yours has the cubby next to the CD player, that should be the newer one.
Per my other post, call Rector in Burlingame and see if they are experienced in it yet. Rector seems to be much more up to snuff these days from the Bay Area posts. I'm closer to Carlsen physically, but have found Rector much more consistent in recent years.

The real info, from Audi's own documentation

Maybe someone in the area can do the VAG COM tweak for me after I do the installation myself
I don't have VAG COM but maybe someone in the area has it and can do the tweak for me.
I just ordered the parts for the retrofit (all 3 numbers) online. The installation itself should not be a problem - just the SW tweak.
Taking the car to the dealer this Friday for the MMI upgrade - I am still on 10. They have to update me for free since the car is still under warranty and the bluetooth feature doesn't recognize my phone properly (just hands-free functionality, no phone book, ...).

You could just pay them too once you have it in.
It is just a few minutes; if you pay them, including the car database update, it might be 1/2 hour. Or, I am in Menlo Park on the peninsula--hence the handle...

Alright - I'll report back once I receive the parts.
My car already has the glovebox with the 2nd cubby. I think I'll attempt the hardware install myself first.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Looks like the AMI main kit is out of stock right now :(
Excerpt of the message I got from Genuineaudiparts:
"The 4E0057785 AMI unit is currently unavailable. I have the "B" version in stock. I am trying to determine if this version will be compatible with your car. "
