Default A8 4.0T pre-owned purchase decision

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a D4 4.0T as we're expanding our household from 2 to 3 cars (my wife will take my 2018 Q7 while I will be using the D4 as my daily driver). I have a few criteria for the one I want (blue or black exterior, brown or black interior, premium/DAP/luxury packages, one owner car). There aren't many cars around that fulfill those criteria. There are 2 that I'm currently considering:
1. 2015 A8L 4.0T, 45,000 miles, no more warranty, $37,000. I drove it and had it checked out by my Audi dealer and it needs the downpipes replaced for the 1K/3K vibration, it needs one new engine mount (based on error code), and new front rotors. The dealer selling the car is willing to work with the Audi dealer on doing some of the repairs - we'll see where it ends up.
2. 2016 A8L 4.0T Sport, 59,000 miles, CPO (12 months/unlimited miles), $41,000.

I would love to have a 2016 given the slightly higher power and sportier exterior, but I worry about the higher mileage on the car + it has the 10-spoke Star wheels which I don't like. The 2015 has the 5 double-spoke wheels which I love.

What would you guys do? Should I be worried about the repairs on the 2015, even if the selling dealer covers (most of) the cost? Is almost 60,000 miles on a 3-year old A8 a concern?

Thanks in advance!
Tom

60,000 miles on a three years car is a lot of miles, you really need to check carefully that car if you decide to buy it. If you want a 4.0 T car I would go for a very low mileage car in the light of this turbo problem that, apparently, we all will be exposed to, and btw with the longest warranty you can afford.

I'd take the 2015 and roll the 4k you save into an extended warranty! Plus you get the wheels you want

Read about the blown turbos, and think hard about owning a 4.0T Audi. Knowing what I know now, I would have stayed away.

I did read a lot about it and it's a big part of why I'm concerned about a high mileage car. I wouldn't buy it without any type of extended warranty in any case.

Have the turbo problems generally been covered by extended warranties? Is there a risk that even with a "platinum" level extended warranty they wouldn't be covered if they fail?

Thanks for all the advice!

+1

Or consider a diesel model and have it tuned.

You could likely find a 3.0T with half the mileage at the same or lower pricing and with a CPO warranty. The 3.0T is a bullet proof engine and if you do an APR Stage 1, it makes a big difference in the performance. I had the tune completed back in January and while there isn't much difference in city stop and go there is a huge difference in hard acceleration and highway passing maneuvers, on-ramp acceleration, etc. I'd be lying if I didn't wish for the V8 at times, but in my humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with the 3.0T. By and large, the people on this forum who have them, love them.

No tune and mine is fine, as is.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I went ahead and picked up the 2015 A8L 4.0T yesterday. The selling dealer agreed to cover for the downpipe and engine mount repairs as well as most of the front rotor replacements.

Have only driven it for about 30 miles, but so far, loving every bit of it!
