Broken sideview mirror glass..
Hello A8 friends. My stepmom has a 2013 A8 Prestige and yesterday morning somebody bumped her mirror by walking by she says.. (she wasn't by the car when this happened) but it ended up shattering the passenger side view mirror glass. The actual side view mirror is fine and all the connections (heater and directional pad) still work fine. The dealer wants 532 dollars to replace the glass.. my question is can I get the side view mirror kit from AutoZone and make this work? Iv'e done it before for my truck so I don't see why it couldn't be done for her car. Heated mirrors are never used as we live in Arizona. Thanks for any input on this i'm just trying to save her from having to spend the money.

I meant to post this note here (thought I did), but the biggest problem with breaking your side view mirror is the leakage of the fluid from the mirror (stuff that dims the mirror for electroluminence) which will stain the door's paint. Happened on my Mini van last month. By the time my wife realized the fluid had been leaking out of the broken mirror it had stained the front and rear door. Took two hours of buffing, compounding, polishing and waxing to get most of it off. Our mirror cost $490 for a Sienna. I figure the mirror on an A8 would be $5,000. LOL.....

I didn't realize that our D4 side view mirrors were electrochromic/auto-dimming. Looks like I learned something new today!
That would explain the replacement price for the OEM part. You can get a non electrochromic aftermarket replacement online for around $20. So I guess it depends on how much she needs the dimming function.
Although in the future, once it's repaired, it would probably be wise for her to enable her A8s autofold feature to protect her side mirrors from damage when parked.

The first time I ran across that feature was in a JMC Jimmy I bought second hand (biggest car mistake of my life, that car was unstable at ANY SPEED). Anyway the Drivers side and Middle rear view mirrors had that feature but NOT THE PASSENGER SIDE WTF...I had to turn the passenger side mirror down at night like in the old days of highway driving at night.
Once you have a car with that feature it's hard to live without it.
