I would suggest purchasing a VAG specific reader. The two main contenders at this point is the original VAGCOM and the relatively newer OBDEleven... they will give you much more specific codes and more than likely actually be able to give you a very good idea as to which component is having issues. Well worth the investment.

Lots of threads here on the two tools of you would like to search a little also...

P11BE - Camshaft Actuator "B" Cylinder 8 Circuit Open or Short to Battery voltage
Variable Valve Lift (VVL) Actuator, Inlet open, circuit open
or
Variable Valve Lift (VVL) Actuator, Inlet open, short to Battery voltage
Check Intake Camshaft Adjuster 1 for Cylinder 8 -F476-

Background:
"Cylinder deactivation is achieved through AVS (Audi valvelift system) technology. The key to this design is the shape of the second cam. During 4-cylinder mode, the camshafts are shifted to a round lobe that does not create any valve lift, so the valves remain closed. Corresponding to the firing order, it is always cylinders 2, 3, 5, and 8 that are deactivated. When the cylinders are deactivated, the valves remain closed. Fuel injection and ignition are switched OFF during this time. During deactivation of the cylinders, the exhaust valves remain closed following ignition and combustion. Exhaust gas is therefore “trapped.” The deactivated cylinders operate as air springs, with temperatures remaining at a high level. Any vibration of the engine that occurs is reduced as much as possible by newly developed active engine mounts during deactivation. The newly developed Active Noise Control (ANC) system also comes into play to minimize any discomfort to the passengers."

Location is rear part of driver's side cylinder head just to the right and below the ignition coilpack.
p/n might be 06E109257N but double check for yourself.
I'd check the wiring and wiring harness before replacing the valve. It could be just a loose connection.
