Default Double pane glass, except rear window.

Hi guys!

I'm sorry if my sentences are wrong sometimes, but English isn't my mother language. We bought an A8 2013 a few days ago, with the option double glass. Now every window is double glass (even the little at the c-pillar) except the rear window...

All the windows are called (at the black stamp in the corner) "Soliver". Only the rear window is called "Guardian" as you can see at the photo's.

Is this normal for the double glass option, maybe there is an option with or without the rear window in double glass. Or have they replaced the rear window with a cheaper 1 layer glass?

Hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!

"All" the windows

Rear window

Welcome!

Your English is better than many who speak it exclusively

Soliver and Guardian are the manufacturers as denoted by the DOT90/DOT22 for US and E6/E11 for EU.

Unfortunately I do not know if the rear window is double pane or not, and am wondering about it now too...

Haha thanks jakematic and thanks for the fast reply!

The rear window is 100% not double, because I can feel the ceramic (the black dots).

After some googling every code in the service manual... I found out that "VW8" is the code of our double glass.
But I didn't find out anything about the rear window.

Maybe somebody got the time to check if they have the "VW8" option on the sticker in there service manual (if you have double glass).

And also could check if they feel the black dots (and heating lines) at there back window?

Perhaps the defogger makes it not possible to have double pain glass for the rear window.

Mine is specced double glass but as you say the rear window is not. Dots or not you can open the trunk and view the edge of the glass. It is however quite thick so I am thinking it has to do with safety ie the rear window will pop out if you apply enough pressure or scatter like crazy if you hit it with a sharp object.
Have never traveled in the back but my gut says there is not more noise coming in from the rear window compared to the rest.

I believe only side window glass has the double pane option. Front and rear windshields are already thicker gauge than the standard side window glass, so it's not practical to have them thicker than they're already specc'd and remain within acceptable safety standards, or have proper body production fitment---the side window thickness fitment has more flexibility.

The front windshield is composed of 3 layers: glass/PVB (polyvinyl butyral)/glass--"safety glass". This is standard on all vehicles. When equipped with the "double glass" on the side windows, you actually have the same 3-layer type of construction as the front windshield--glass/PVB/glass---but I'm not sure if the windshield is thicker than the side windows with this option. I would think it is. From what I can see of the bottom edge of the rear window in my trunk, this is one single layer of glass, not laminated. (I have the "double glass" in my side windows--2012 A8L.)
