Engine cooling fan runs high
Hi,
Anyone else experience this one?
Engine cooling fan runs on high when the engine is running, sounds like an aircraft! The engine is not overheating and there is sufficient coolant.
It stops when the engine is turned off. If you open the drivers door it comes back on then goes off 3 times.
if the car is locked and you open any door it come on, then goes off.
Why does it do this? Any ideas?
Thank you!

You need to scan it with VCDS or similar tool. From D3 and other Audi experience, it will probably report a cooling system malfunction. When it has that, the car ECU forces the cooling fans to highest speed to try to protect against overheating scenarios. A VCDS type scan will probably be more specific about the root cause. OBDII generic ones less so, and may only see the malfunction code without also flagging the other codes or issues driving it. Can be thermostat, various sensors, fans themselves and other things that are triggering the fan high speed running--called "jet engine mode" in the Board vernacular. Some are pricier repairs, others are fairly simple.
If you don't have or want to get the diagnostic tool, then (besides a dealer) a decent garage/workshop/mechanic focusing on either Audi's or VW's should.

Hey,
I had a similar issue. I also noticed a mild oil leak from the engine so do check on the floor if you find any oil stains and also do check your engine temperature if maintained.
My car at service with Audi found it had a crack in one of the tanks (cant remember which one) and they had to break through many parts to get to it and then replace all of them. Billed me approx $5000

Now fixed by Audi Ipswich
Garage identified the two tiny wires with a manufacturing fault from new and fixed it. Saved thousands from other garages wanting to replace the computer, both fans and other unrelated items which were not at all necessary.
Diagnostics work was also a complete waste of money and actually just fraud by a few garages charging hundreds to do no actual diagnosis other than a quick scan.
