What year and motor (should include this in avatar, sig. or post in general).

Warranty or not?

Who did last oil change?--dealer, indy, DIY?

The underlying question is whether it has too much oil, or the sensor is bad. If oil just recently changed, could be the former. If not, more likely a bad sensor.

2017 S8. CPO. Last change was before I got it, by the dealer. Either way, from what you're saying looks like I should take it to the dealer.

Yes. Of course if you know no oil was added, then logically it is not actually over full so it is not an emergency. The worst scenario is when the sensor fails in the other direction and it says to add oil. Then if someone doesn't know it they may just keep dumping oil in. Happened on Q5 board a few times and by 3 quarts or so too full started damaging motor seals and more.

You might consider buying a dipstick for the longer term anyway. See my mod post on it, specific to S8. Then you know for real the level per a tried and true physical measurement. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...4-0ts-2897711/

This happened to mine after an oil change though.... (assuming the too much was put in).
Took it back to the dealer and they corrected it.

Happened when my 15 S8 was new, actually on the test drive with the salesman. Solution? I just drove it and the problem soon resolved itself. No damage, no worry.
