It’s absolutely a no-brainer to wrap. A quality matte paint job is much more expensive than a standard gloss color. Then once you’ve spent MANY thousands you have a finish where scratches cannot be removed, and every organic entity threatens to etch it (acid rain, hard watch deposits from washing, bird bombs, bugs). It’s very very laborious to maintain. On the other hand, a very good vinyl wrap is more like $2,500-3000 and is quite robust and if something happens you can simply replace the vinyl on that body panel. If you’re handy, patient and have a lot of time you can even wrap yourself. I’ve done it 4 or 5 times. Cost is less than $500.
Downsides are:
-unless you pay for a very high quality job likely the door jambs will remain body color (not the end of the world if your paint is dark) and tough areas to wrap could have a wrinkle or other blemish (think upper corner of the hood or around door handles or mirrors) just because someone owns a shop doesn’t mean the job will be high quality- I’ve seen it on so many exotics
-if you get a gloss color there will be more orange peel than a real paint job
-you are limited to available colors
-it’s not quite permanent. Good vinyl will last about 5 years, then you’ll need to remove it and redo it

Each car kind of dictates what should be removed for the best, or easiest, job. For the allroad I removed the front and rear bumpers, tail lights, license plate ‘tub’, grilles and fender flares. On the A8 I would probably leave the front bumper in place
