Default S8 vs. S63 AMG

Let me first start by saying that I have driven tons of cars, and the Audi S8 is one of the best I have ever driven. A beautiful, quiet, luxurious, and calming car that has a completely different personality once you wake it up. Just UN-F**KING-believable. I jammed the accelerator pedal and the thing pinned me to the back of my seat as I rocketed down the road, and I experienced G-forces I haven't experienced in any other car besides the Tesla P85. Only difference is, the S8's interior looks $50-100K more expensive.

As for the regular A8, I love it too, especially as a diesel. But for me it's a toss-up between it and the S550 for the segment leader, and I'm tempted to give the edge to the S-Class due to how unbelievably they executed that design. I park them every now and then in my job and I never want to leave the car; they are that amazing, though nowhere near as amazing as the S8.

I have not driven an S63 AMG, though. I know that the S8 kicked the Alpina B7's butt all over the place in a MotorTrend Head2Head, but I can't find one with the S63 AMG. Does anyone have any experience with this one and compared it to the S8?

P.S. unbiased opinions are welcome. I love my 2013 Audi A4 but willingly accept the Mercedes-Benz C300 as the new segment leader. Meanwhile I believe many, many Audis, such as the S5, RS7, and Q5 TDI, lead their respective segments. I'm curious to know if the S8 does the same.

I have not driven the D4 S8 or new S63, but I'm always looking for cars to buy in the future. In 4matic guise, the S63 is an equal match for the S8 in a drag race, and while I suspect the S8 would have it in the corners(thanks to being a few hundred pounds lighter,) your typical driver wouldn't see the difference. The S8 is quite a lot cheaper and more fuel efficient. However, thanks to the brand recognition, the Mercedes will impress people with barely more than a casual interest in cars more simply because they assume it should be better based on the nameplate, regardless of whether or not it actually is.

At the end of the day, both are tremendous automobiles, and I'm quite torn between the two. I think you should spend a little time driving both cars, and see which one suits your taste. There really isn't a wrong choice, they're both exquisite.

(Don't know where they get the bit about "launch control"!)

I don't know where they got that, either. I should note, that video features the rear wheel drive variant of the S63. When the magazines tested the 4matic version, it was within a tenth of the S8. What I don't know is which is easier to achieve closest to those numbers.

I've owned both. Both are incredibly fast. For me S8 wins hands down for all around driving pleasure, especially if you drive a lot of miles.

Yeah the S8 is definitely the driver’s car. I do drive quite a few miles a year, I put 6,000 miles on the S8 in a month and a half without even driving it every day... just love to cruise lol.

Maybe I’ll get the S63 and if I don’t like it I’ll sell it to get an S8, we’ll see...
